The only thing predictable about Texas weather is the blistering summer heat. With that heat, truckers face unique challenges. Here are three tips to get you through that summer heat faster and more efficiently.

Wear Sunscreen and Sun Protective gear

Logging 12+ hour days on the road as a hot shot trucker is tough work. Direct sunlight on your skin during most of those hours takes a heavy toll. To keep your body healthy in the long run, it’s important to protect your skin from the sun. Applying sunscreen daily, regardless of activity, is becoming more and more highly recommended by experts. Wearing long-sleeve activewear, neck buffs, sunglasses, and brimmed hats also aid greatly in reducing sun exposure.

Keep An Eye On Your Tires

With summer heat comes tire blowout season. By keeping your tires in good shape and checking them regularly, you can extend their life during the tough summer months. Routine checks can best be remembered with the three I’s: Inflation, Impact, and Internal weight. Making sure your tires are properly inflated drastically impacts the quality of life for your tires. An underinflated tire puts undue stress on tire internals and can lead to tire failure. Avoiding heavy impacts on your tires like potholes and debris is also important. Finally, insuring your load is within the maximum capacity of your truck’s capabilities matters especially when latent air and asphalt temperatures climb into the 90’s.

Beware of Busy Highways

Remember those great summer road trips as a kid? Summer is hands down the highway’s busiest season. Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, and all weekends during the summer are prime travel times for millions of Americans. Crowded roads can lead to irrational or even dangerous driving. Drive defensively and keep your wits about you during the summer months.
